China, 17th January 2025 - Charlesworth China successfully hosted the Global Publishing Solutions Innovation and Development Forum and its 25th Anniversary Reception at the Beijing International Hotel Conference Centre. The Global Publishing Solutions Innovation and Development Forum and Charlesworth China’s 25th Anniversary Reception aimed to share innovative initiatives across the full spectrum of academic publishing, highlighting Charlesworth China's achievements and future vision. The event attracted numerous guests from academic publishing, research institutions, and industry associations. The celebration included two main segments: keynote speeches and roundtable discussions, which addressed cutting-edge topics in academic publishing.

Event Overview

The event began with a welcome speech by Michael Evans, CEO of Charlesworth Group. He reflected the 25-year journey of Charlesworth in the Chinese market, from its initial exploration and establishment to its position as an indispensable force in academic publishing. Following the opening speech, Mr. Xu Jing, Director of the National Science and Technology Library (NSTL), delivered a guest address. Next, Mr. Yan Shuai, Consultant of STM China, presented a keynote speech titled “STM 2025 Key Sector Report.” He provided an in-depth analysis of the key activity areas of STM in China, dissecting current trends and challenges in the academic publishing industry. Topics included the accelerated digital transformation, the role of the “Open Science International Cooperation Initiative” in sharing global scientific innovation, China’s newly developed journal lists such as the “Global OA Journal Index,” and the transformative impact of emerging technologies on publishing workflows. His insights prompted in-depth reflection among attendees on the future of the industry.

The first roundtable discussion focused on the hot topic of “The Current State, Challenges, and Future Opportunities of Open Access (OA) and Transformative Agreements.” Panelists included Mr. Zheng Jiancheng, Director of Special Task Division at NSTL; Ms. Dou Tianfang, Deputy Director of Tsinghua University Library; Mr. Li Xin, Deputy Director of the Data Resources Division at the National Science Library, CAS; and Ms. Ren Huiling, Director of the Medical Information Resource and Knowledge Service Center at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Drawing from their extensive professional experiences, they shared successful case studies on Open Access practices, explored the key roles of transformative agreements in promoting academic resource sharing, and discussed how to achieve broader dissemination and efficient utilisation of academic achievements.

Subsequently, Mr. Shi Lei, Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Director of the Journals Centre at Tsinghua University Press, delivered a keynote speech titled “Innovative Development and Internationalisation Pathways of SciOpen.” He provided a detailed overview of the innovative measures introduced by the SciOpen platform in academic publishing. This platform features end-to-end digital publishing capabilities, supports diversified publishing models, and integrates intelligent and knowledge-based services. By building a digital bridge to the international academic network, SciOpen has actively participated in the governance of international academic publishing and expanded its international cooperation network through collaborations with renowned global institutions. Mr. Shi’s report offered valuable insights and references for the operation and development of domestic academic journals.
